Lesson Seeds: The lesson seeds are ideas for the indicator/objective that can be used to build a lesson. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction.

Seed

Prior to presenting a reading selection to students, the teacher should preview the selection and prepare 4-6 true or false statements about the most important ideas in the text. Statements that support or challenge student beliefs or experiences about these ideas are the most effective. The teacher should write these statements on the overhead or prepare them as a student handout. Based upon prior knowledge, each student should read these statements and decide whether he/she believes the statement to be true or false. Once students have made their decisions, they and the teacher should discuss each statement and determine a class poll of their beliefs about the listed ideas. These statements are preparatory to reading of the selected text and should be revisited once actual reading of the text is complete.

Seed

The teacher should preview the text, which will be presented to the class. Next, in preparation for reading, the teacher will share the topic of the text with the class. Students will be instructed to brainstorm as many words and phrases that he/she can think of that are related to the topic. After a period of time to record responses, the teacher will ask students to share their entries. The teacher will record the suggestion where all students can see the growing list. Students will maintain the currency of their lists by circling any suggestions they already have listed and adding and drawing a rectangle around any new ideas. The consensus list will continue until all suggestions are exhausted. Before actual reading of the text begins, the teacher and students should discuss the list to generate some suggestions about the content of the text.

Seed

The teacher should preview the text, which will be presented to the class and record selected words and phrases from the beginning of the text. These should be made available to students on the overhead, via a presenter, a handout, etc… Once students have access to the words and phrases they should consider what they already know about those words and phrases. A class discussion about the list will allow all students to share what they already know about these words and to determine some ideas about the content of the text.
