Indicator 3. Use strategies to make meaning from text (during reading)

Objective e. Make, confirm, or adjust predictions


To model the ongoing making of predictions as students read, the teacher should select an age-appropriate text and assign silent reading or read aloud a designated portion of that text. At the selected juncture, the teacher and students should make a prediction about the next chunk of assigned text. The teacher will record the prediction on a flow chart. Again, the teacher will choose the mode of reading, and the reading of the text will continue. At this point, the teacher and students will assess their first prediction to determine its accuracy and proceed to make another prediction about the text they are about to read. This second prediction should be written on the flow chart. This enables students to judge over a series of predictions how accurate their judgments are.


This strategy is a modified version of Kylene Beers’s “Tea Party” strategy. As students read, they should be instructed to stop at a designated place to make a prediction about the next chunk of reading they will complete. The teacher should make clear how much additional text they will read. Students should consider what they have read as well as what they will read as they make a prediction about the next portion of text. Each student should write his/her prediction on a note card. Once all note cards are prepared, students should walk around the room sharing their predictions with others, judging, and perhaps, amending their own predictions before returning to their seats to resume reading.
