To ensure that students can use paraphrasing as a during- reading strategy, the teacher should select a short reading selection to share with students. Poetry works well with this activity. First the teacher should read the text aloud to students. Next the teacher should indicate a sentence or line of text and paraphrase it for students. The teacher should explain the nature of a paraphrase. Next the teacher should retell the sentence or line of text and retell it for the students. Because a paraphrase is key to creating a summary, this process should be repeated with additional portions of the text to ensure that student realize the difference between retelling and paraphrasing.


As a during- reading strategy, paraphrasing and summarizing go hand-in-hand. To assist students with paraphrasing, the teacher should select an informational text where he/she highlights, underlines, etc…the most important ideas. The teacher and students should read the text and then revisit the marked portions of the text to practice paraphrasing the important ideas. First the teacher should model the paraphrase and then begin to call upon individual students to offer their paraphrases.
