Practice Activity: Graphing and Analyzing Classroom Data

Create a grade book

.Though some districts are starting to collect milestone data on school progress, few, if any, districts and schools are collecting individual student assessment data on the outcomes and core learning goals that would provide them either baseline or progress data on individual students. Our experience in working with schools and districts around the state has shown us that too many schools assess students on completion of activities and assignments to determine a report card grade rather than on the attainment of the Maryland Learner Outcomes (K-8) and Core Learning Goals (9-12). The key to successful monitoring os student progress is to collect data on the content standard indicators.

.

Successful schools use performance assessment as one form of classroom assessment at all grade levels. Classroom performance assessments can provide relevant, useful data in improving MSPAP performance. They provide timely feedback on the effectiveness of instructional strategies, and best of all, they provide individual student data. They encourage accountability for all grade levels instead of focusing on grades 3, 5, and 8. They allow a school to monitor progress without dependence on MSPAP scores alone. Looking at the performance of individual students at every grade level can be invaluable information for instructional planning. Individual needs can be identified and addressed throughout the school year, and data would be available for students who need interventions.

.

Some schools have used spreadsheet programs such as EXCEL to design their own data recording instruments. You can see an example of this on the mdk12 web site.

.

Teachers may need some support in setting up gradebooks for the collection of diagnostic data on their student's progress. An example of this can be seen on the mdk12 web site. You can also view Gaithersburg Elementary School Grade Book templates:
